Finishing - Film to Film (without DI)

  1. Shoot film in Camera
  2. Process (Develop) film
  3. Dailies - Transfer film to a Std Def format, usually Beta Sp, DV Cam, DV, or VHS
  4. Rent or buy an off line non-linear editing system (Avid, Final Cut Pro, Premiere, etc)
  5. Input (digitize) video tapes into the editing system
  6. Spend as much time as needed to make creative decisions and edit the material into the final edited version. No cutting is actually done since all the information is on a hard drive. Slug out sections (leave space holders) for effects and titles.
  7. Make film Opticals, that is, titles, supers, effects, overlays, subtitles, etc. Make a daily transfer and input into the editing system.
  8. Output an Edit Decision List (EDL) from the edit system that represents the final editing decisions.
  9. Give the EDL, the original negative, and the opticals to a negative cutter who will create a “conformed, cut negative” to precisely match the final video edit.
  10. Make a sound track master by creating or improving the dialog, effects & music. Sync the audio to the video. Make an Optical Negative Sound Track
  11. From Cut Negative and Optical Negative Track make an Answer Print
  12. After approval of the Answer Print, make an Interpositive, Internegative, Check Print, and Release Prints as needed.
